Grand Jubileum Tour
30 years SCARB
August 28th – 30th 2008
One of the activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Dutch Alfa Romeo Owners Club (SCARB) is a three day tour, the Grand Jubileum Tour. The SCARB (with almost 4.000 members) is the oldest and leading Alfa Romeo Club in the Netherlands. The tour is open to members of the SCARB and foreign Alfa Romeo owners.
The tour will take you along some of the most scenic and historic yet unknown parts of the Netherlands which will surprise even the Dutch participants. Two days later the tour will end on the TT racing circuit of Assen, where the annual club weekend of the SCARB, the Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo will be in full swing. We expect many Alfa Romeo models, from vintage to modern to be present in large numbers. The SSAR program provides races, a spares market, a concorso d’eleganza and much more.
The program:Thursday August 28thWe will welcome you with coffee and cake at Alfa Romeo dealer Sam van Lingen in Utrecht, from 10 to 12 p.m. The first part of the tour brings you close to Amsterdam, driving along the river Vecht. Old houses of the VOC merchants bring the Golden Age alive. You will pass Baambrugge and a few kilometers on the A10 highway will lead you further north.
North of Amsterdam the tour roams across some idyllic villages like De Rijp and Den Ilp. In Den Ilp Anton Heyboer (deceased in 2005) lived with his five brides, working on his etchings. A stop has been planned in Volendam, famous for its traditional costumes, for a walk trough the village. The roads in this part of the Netherlands are ideal for a scenic drive. At the end of the day you will arrive in Wieringerwerf at the Van der Valk Hotel for a well earned dinner and a comfortable stay for the night.
Friday August 29thAt 9 a.m. you will head for naval city Den Helder with a visit to state wharf Willemsoord and the Naval and Rescue work Museum. There is also an opportunity to have a look at the replica of the VOC vessel Prins Willem. Then the tour continues along the Afsluitdijk, the 32 km long and 90 meters wide dike that connects the northern provinces North Holland and Friesland and separates the North Sea from the former Southern See (now called IJsselmeer). The Afsluitdijk is 75 years old now. At Koninklijke Tichelaars Aardewerkfabriek (Royal Tichelaars Pottery) in Makkum, founded in 1572 and the oldest business in the Netherlands, you can see how the famous pottery and ceramics are made. Another stop will be in Workum. There you will find the Jopie Huisman Museum. Huisman was rag-and-bone man who made extremely realistic paintings from the garbage he collected. The tour guides you through the very scenic old Southern See harbour villages Stavoren and Hindeloopen. Other villages you will see are Rode Klif and Mirns which provide wide views over the open landscape. At the end of this second part you will arrive in Emmeloord (which is below sea level) at the Van der Valk Hotel for dinner and a stay for the night.
Saturday August 30thDeparture at about 9 a.m. for the Oude Land where you will visit Blokzijl with its historic harbour and locks. Lunch will be served at an old tavern, Geertien’s in Muggenbeet (which means mosquito bite). The tour will take you along the splendid nature sites of Havelte and Dwingeloo and end at the Assen TT circuit in the afternoon to join the Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo.
The rest of the day you will certainly enjoy yourself strolling trough the paddock, making new friends, looking for rare spares and watching hundreds of Alfa Romeos.
Sunday August 31st (optional)Second day of the Spettacolo Sportivo Alfa Romeo at the Assen TT circuit. The paddock will be filled with about 1.000 Alfa Romeos of all different models and ages.
